Strength assessment of old masonry arch bridges through moderate destructive testing methods

چکیده

This paper aims to assess the strength of a 100 + year old masonry arch bridges in Australia that are currently operation and routinely subjected train loadings. Towards this end, 45 cores 150 mm diameter with varied lengths joint configurations were drilled from typical bridge tested. Out these samples, 30 tested under direct compression 15 for tensile varying bed angles. The samples testing regularised by developing high mortar capping whereas, according Brazilian method commonly used evaluating splitting materials. failure mode was due vertical cracking bricks, spalling perpend joints. average compressive determined as 10.6 MPa. Young’s modulus also magnitude 11,048 MPa which is comparable an in-situ flat jack test conducted on similar bridges. increased number joints decreased strength. Splitting tests revealed 1.34 From results it can be concluded aged has higher than previously thought seems capable sustaining current loads, observed at site.

Application of infrared thermography to the non-destructive testing of concrete and masonry bridges

Within recent years there has been an increase in the use of NDT methods to detect defects and anomalies in various civil engineering structures. Infrared thermography, which has been successfully used in the USA in civil engineering applications, is being increasingly applied in the UK as an NDT technique. For example, the technique is now included in the Building Regulations for the assessmen...

A Parametric Study: Frame Analysis Method for Masonry Arch Bridges

The predictability of masonry arch bridges and their behaviour is widely considered doubtful due to the lack of knowledge about the conditions of a given masonry arch bridge. The assessment methods for masonry arch bridges are MEXE, ARCHIE, RING and Frame Analysis Method. The material properties of the masonry and fill material are extremely difficult to determine accurately. Consequently, it i...

Sensitivity Analysis and Parameter Identification on historical Masonry Arch Bridges

Close to reality computation of the serviceability and load-carrying capacity of old masonry arch bridges for rising live loads is a current problem. In Germany many of such roadand railway bridges exist. Some of the most important features for applicable numerical evaluation of masonry arch bridges are a realistic structural model (very often three dimensional models are necessary), the consid...

Assessment, Reliability and Maintenance of Masonry Arch Railway Bridges in Europe

The main purpose of this paper is to give an overview on the state of the art of inspection, assessment and maintenance of masonry arch railway bridges by the presentation of the results of an ongoing international research project run by the International Union of Railways (UIC) with the participation of 14 railway administrations. The survey has shown that the European railways partaking in t...
